Murder rate in Venezuela quadruples under Chavez

Homicides in Venezuela have quadrupled during President Hugo Chavez's 11 years in power, with two people murdered every hour, according to new figures from a non-governmental organization.

The Venezuelan Observatory of Violence (OVV), whose data is widely followed in the absence of official statistics, said the South American nation has one of the highest crime rates on the continent, with 54 homicides per 100,000 citizens in 2009.

That rate is only surpassed in Latin America by El Salvador where 70 in every 100,000 citizens were murdered last year, the OVV said, citing official statistics from that country.

Crime repeatedly comes first on Venezuelans' list of worries. It has also begun to drag on Chavez's traditionally high approval ratings as well as scare tourists who come to Venezuela.

"The problem is not so much the criminals, but rather the government's inaction and lack of policies," OVV director Roberto Briceno Leon told Reuters.

Inaction & a lack of policies?? Perhaps if he were as interested in protecting the people he rules instead of trying to extend the reach of his tentacles beyond his country's borders & dominate them like he does Venezuelans, then perhaps things would be a little safer there.

It appears the MLA expenses scandal, among other things, has cause the NDP gov't here in Nova Scotia to lose some of its lustre. a new poll released yesterday shows the Dippers, while still w/ a strong lead in the polls, has taken a steep drop from just a few months ago & the opposition beginning to rebound:

NDP: 46%
Lib: 26%
PC: 22%

While many would say this drop was to be expected, still it comes just before the Dippers will table a budget that will likely see signifigant tax increases. The scandal, which showed the holier than thou NDP to be just as bad as the other parties, along with numerous sweetheart giveaways to Big Labour & the bloom is off the Orange rose & a tough budget they will deliver soon & the NDP seems to be well on its way to being a one term gov't. One can hope.

What in the name of all that is good & true would posess the Pm to think that it'd be a good idea to mess around with our anthem?? Has there been some massive groundswell calling for a change of some sort?? No. Is this even an issue that is on the radar for the majority of Canadians?? No. This is & has always been a botique issue for the extreme left, namely all those man hating radical feminazis who, with no real issues to get worked up about these days, obsess over emasculating the english language. That's who cares, & I cannot for the life of me, why Harper is worrying what those broads think.

Does the PM & the genuises advising him really think that Canadian women are so lacking in intelligence that they think that b/c of "all thy sons command", the anthem is a boys only proposition?? C'mon, I have no doubt the feminazis think so, as they are so out to lunch that they'd believe any sorta nonsense.

Bottom line, it's well meaning but how many times have terrible ideas been foisted upon people who are well meaning?? The only people who care about emasculating the Anthem are the bra burners, & no matter what they do they'll never support the CPC, & if they ever started to i'd probably reconsider my support of the party. Mandatory minimum penalties are a contentious tool the federal Conservatives have increasingly invoked in their “tough-on-crime” agenda. Critics of minimum penalties say they strip judges of sentencing discretion, discourage guilty pleas and lead to more trials and overcrowded jails.

LeBel said “the general rule” is judges exercising sentencing discretion must follow the guidelines set out by Parliament, and “impose sentences respecting statutory minimums” or other legislated limits on sentencing discretion.

There may be “exceptional” cases where a sentence ought to be reduced even below a statutory minimum, where a lower sentence might be the “sole effective remedy for some particularly egregious form of misconduct by state agents,” the high court said

Imagine that, courts having to respect the will of Parliament, in other words the will of the people, instead of acting like unaccountable gods whose decisions cannot be questioned. This is indeed a refreshing development for our country, if indeed the courts do respect the authority of the legislature. The people would be taking back control of their country.

To add on to the excellent points made by frmgirl regarding Quebec's hypocritical attitude towards the Oilsands, is how the Charest government is two faced for criticizing the Oilsands & it's negative impact the environment & human health, all the while aggressively supporting the Quebec Asbestos industry, a far more odious resources than bitumen sand is.

Asbestos has been proven to be a toxic substance that causes cancer, & lung diseases, to name a few & has been responsible for the deaths of thousands. It is also a major industry in Quebec that employs thousands, generates billions in economic activity & is primarily located in a politically valuable region of the province all major federal & provincial parties covet. As such they all make excuses for the Asbestos industry, trot out all sorts of propoganda & flat out lie to say that it's a good thing & turn a blind eye to it's negative consequences all in the name of politics.

Which is why I find it so galling to hear some Quebec politician like Charest bitch about the Oilsands which creates tens of thousands of jobs across Canada, including manufacturing jobs in Quebec. He has the gall the attack the oil patch when the asbestos industry's negative aspects are far, far worse.

For the record, I could give a crap about the Asbestos industry. Everyone knows the consequences of the stuff & if they're stoopid enough to buy it & use it, they deserve their fate. What I take issue with is the hypocrisy of those who would bite the hands who feed them, like Quebec, when they are every bit as bad as those they condemn. It's time to call bullshit on Quebec.

He was the one-time must-see anti-Bush ranter who helped rescue MSNBC (yes, it's still on at night) from even worse oblivion years ago.

The guy, who's even apparently tried to get some Sarah Palin-like eyeglasses, is now forced to leap over-the-top on ex-state senators like Scott Brown and Tuesday's worst person, Fox News' Glenn Beck. Beck is the successful talker with the perfect haircut for radio. Like most Americans, he wasn't watching Keith.

There are a couple of reasons for KO's frustration and anger and volume and core meltdown over the Massachusetts election outcome, among other issues of galactic import. For one, lots more ranters around nowadays on all sides, including that colleague of Keith's with the hugest head in TV. Please, no 3-D for him!

Also, Olbermann's showboat is sinking. Listing in you-know-which direction.

It's as if he thinks talking LOUDER will keep his low cell battery from dying.

Worst, Olbermann's network president, Phil Griffin, is publicly praising him, always an ominous sign in television. While referring to his host almost in the past tense. "Keith has been our tentpole," Griffin says, adding later, "I'm pleased with where we are."

Where they are, as Jeff Bercovici points out over at Daily Finance, is way behind the big boys over at Fox News, Bill O'Reilly and gang. In fact, Keith is so far behind Bill, he can't even make out the state of the license plate, let alone the numbers. Bercovici thinks Americans may be outgrowing Olbermann's schtick.

In the most desirable TV demographic of 25-54, which Keith will soon outgrow himself, "Countdown" lost 44% of its audience from the beginning of President Obama's term until this year. It could have been worse -- say, 45%.

Olbermann averaged 268,000 viewers last month in that sector. That's just several thousand sets of those eyes more than Campbell Brown over on CNN. According to one count, Keith even finished in that time slow behind Nancy Grace. Nancy Grace!

And she's on Headline News, Headline News, the repetitious TV channel the repetitious TV channel inflicted on all U.S. airline travelers within any boarding area around the clock so that when, at least an hour late, each person is finally crammed into plane seats between professional wrestlers, they actually feel relieved.

On the bright side, which everyone knows KO is fond of spotting, his MSNBC audience was only 696,000 viewers 24-54 behind O'Reilly, whose audience has grown 55%, according to Bercovici. Of course, it might be worse this month.

In a sign of how the media old guard have falled in the US, Americans now claim that Fox News is the news organization that they trust the most:

Fox is the most trusted television news network in the country, according to a new poll out Tuesday.

A Public Policy Polling nationwide survey of 1,151 registered voters Jan. 18-19 found that 49 percent of Americans trusted Fox News, 10 percentage points more than any other network.

Thirty-seven percent said they didn’t trust Fox, also the lowest level of distrust that any of the networks recorded.

There was a strong partisan split among those who said they trusted Fox — with 74 percent of Republicans saying they trusted the network, while only 30 percent of Democrats said they did.

CNN was the second-most-trusted network, getting the trust of 39 percent of those polled. Forty-one percent said they didn’t trust CNN.

Each of the three major networks was trusted by less than 40 percent of those surveyed, with NBC ranking highest at 35 percent. Forty-four percent said they did not trust NBC, which was combined with its sister cable station MSNBC.

Thirty-two percent of respondents said they trusted CBS, while 31 percent trusted ABC. Both CBS and ABC were not trusted by 46 percent of those polled

It's no surprise to see this come about. The MSM, w/ the exception of Fox, have gone out of their way to cover up the shortcomings, failings & sleazy antics of the Obama Administration, only Fox has been there to hold their feet to the fire. According to the longtime tradition, if Phil the groundhog sees his shadow on the Feb. 2 unofficial holiday, then there will be six more weeks of winter. If he does not appear to see his shadow, there will be an early spring.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says it's unfair to keep the animal in captivity and subject him to the huge crowds and bright lights that accompany tens of thousands of revelers each year in Punxsutawney, a tiny borough about 65 miles (105 kilometres) northeast of Pittsburgh. PETA is suggesting the use of an animatronic model.

But William Deeley, president of the Inner Circle of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, says the animal is "being treated better than the average child in Pennsylvania." The groundhog is kept in a climate-controlled environment and is inspected annually by the state Department of Agriculture.

Deeley says PETA isn't interested in Phil from Feb. 2 on, and is looking for publicity

I'm more than surprised that PETA hasn't gone after these people before. It's kinda hard for PETA to cry about cruelty given the way Phil lives. Hell, he has a nicer home than I do. I would love it if these freaks went to the Groundhog Day festival there & the groundhog & got attacked by Phil. Boy, I was having a rotten day until I read this. Liberal radio network Air America has gone bankrupt & is closing down Monday nite!!!

Air America Radio, a progressive radio network that once aired commentary from Al Franken and Rachel Maddow, said Thursday it is shutting down immediately.

The company founded in April 2004 said it ceased airing new programs Thursday afternoon and will soon file to be liquidated under Chapter 7 bankruptcy. It began broadcasting reruns of programs and would end those as well Monday night.

Air America said 10 consecutive quarters of declining ad revenue and the difficulty of making money on the Internet contributed to its financial woes.

"The very difficult economic environment has had a significant impact on Air America's business. This past year has seen a `perfect storm' in the media industry generally," the company said in a statement on its Web site.

The network had some 100 radio outlets nationwide.

Franken, a Democrat, hosted his own show from 2004 to 2007 before going on to become a U.S. senator from Minnesota last year after a close election. Maddow went on to host her own TV show on MSNBC

Well happy anniversary Mr. President, the people of Massachusetts gave you a new Republican senator as a present!! In one year, most Americans have soured on the Obamassiah & have developed a severe case of buyer's remorse, as was expressed by Brown-out in the Bay State last nite. Brown won his race, not by trying to blur the lines b/w himself & his Democratic rival, who ran the most dreadful campaign i've ever seen. Makes Kim Campbell's disasterous 1993 campaign look like the picture of competance by comparison. He did it by running on conservative themes like lower taxes, a strong national scurity stance & more personal freedom & less government intrusion into people's lives.

It's a lesson for Democrats that their socialist agenda is not wanted, even in the people's republic of Taxachusetts. They want mainstream policies. you know the kind Obama pledged to enact when he was a candidate for thw White House. Will the Dems gwt the message?? Or will they make like a kamikaze pilot & brazenly push Obamacare thru over the objections of the American people?? If so, they'll be setting themselves up for a bloodbath in November.

It's also a message for the GOP as well. The message: Enough with these BS social issues. Nobody gives a shit about abortion, gay marriage & other wedge cultural issue they used to fire up the religious right. Brown, like his successful cohorts in Virginia & New Jersey a few months ago swept these issues under the rug & focused on what really matters to people. To bang to so-con drum would be perilous & turn off a large swath of the electorate.

Can Scott Brown really win in Massachusetts??

It's been hard for me to believe that it could happen, but it looks more & more likely that Scott Brown could do the once unthinkable & win the Senate seat held by Teddy Kennedy for close to 50 years. Being on the east coast, we get all of the Boston feeds of the US networks so i've been following things w/ great interest. I've refused to believe up to now, but i'm slowly beginning to think that Brown could win. The latest poll out show Brown in the lead for the 1st time:

Scott Brown (50 percent) now leads Democrat Attorney General Martha Coakley (46 percent) in the race to be the next U.S. senator from Massachusetts, according to a Suffolk University/7News poll. James Delorey RIP

I was so hoping this would not be the case. After James was rescued from the forest alive, I thought that he had beaten the odds. You would have figured a 7 year old autistic boy who was lost in the woods & not dressed properly to handle the effects of Nova Scotia's first snowstorm of the season would like be found dead, but he wasn't.

However it didn't end well as he passed away this morning. I'm totally gutted over this incredibly sad news. At least his parents were with him at the end. That's something to be grateful for I suppose. RIP James.

Group B: Argentina, Korea Republic, Greece, Nigeria

Group C: England, USA, Slovenia, Algeria

Group D: Germany, Ghana, Australia, Serbia

Group E: Netherlands, Cameroon, Japan, Denmark

Some thoughts:

- My anger over the way Ireland was knocked out of the World Cup by france's cheating had finally subsided, but when I saw how easy a draw the French got, it's back in a big way/ While they weren't given one of the number 1 seeds, they may as well have when you look at Group A. They should make it out of the group & possibly to the quarterfinals

- Group G is definately this tournament's "group of death". I think the odd country out here will be Portugal. Brazil is Brazil, plus Ivory Coast, led by Didier Drogba, is a country that could do a lotta damage, unfortunately their potential will be greatly stunted b/c even if they advance to the knock-out stage, they still have to contend, most likely, with Spain in the round of 16.

- A not bad draw for both England & the Americans. I'm gonna go out on a limb her & say the US will take the group. If there's ever a time to play England in a major international tourney, it's the 1st game. The 3 Lions always start off slow. Throw in chumps like Algeria, the weakest of the African countries that qualified, & Slovenia which is Algeria's European counterpart, & the US could be in for a lengthy run. However, I suspect England will likely take the group.

While we can chock up some of the past actions of the NDP gov't as business as usual, like giving a plum gov't job to Screaming Alexa's son. this however is a new low in the annals of Nova Scotian patronage. This is further proof that the Dippers would bend over backwards to it's whacko supporters who toughed it out in the political wilderness for years & at a time of economic hardship when Nova Scotians will be asked to make sacrifices in the coming monthss to right the ship of state, this feels like we've been crapped on in the biggest possible way.

I've been boggled by the reaction people have had to the introduction to the HST in BC & Ontario. It's been in place here in Nova Scotia for quite some time & it's one of the few bright spots in our horrible overtaxed economic climate, soon to be made worse by our radical socialist gov't's plans to massively raise taxes.

The HST a good thing, not a bad thing for many reasons:

- It simplifies the tax code. There would be fewer tax structures in BC & Ontario, which is something I thought conservatives were for

- The bureaucracy of gov't will shrink, as there will not be as big a need for tax bureaucrats, give that we

- It will bring about lower income taxes & business taxes, which as I recall, are good things. Not to mention more ethical as participatory taxation is more ethical than having gov't taxing you whether you like it or not.

Plus there's many more. Andrew Coyne has a wonderful column on this subject here. I advise everyone to read it so as to clear up the propoganda against harmonization.

Quebec to reap windfall from NB Power deal. Quelle Surprise

My suspicions about the Hydro Quebec-NB Power deal appear to be confirmed, that Quebec will get the gold mine & New Brunswick will get the shaft, as that old country song goes:

Quebec would reap a windfall of "hundreds of millions of dollars" in federal equalization payments if a proposed deal to purchase New Brunswick's public power utility goes through next year, a leading Newfoundland and Labrador economist says.

Wade Locke, a professor of economics at Memorial University, said if Hydro-Québec uses a portion of its profits - which were $2.7 billion in 2008 - to buy NB Power, that would result in a major drop in its contribution to the coffers of the Quebec government.

That in turn would require the federal government to send more money to the province under Ottawa's revenue-sharing formula, Locke says.

"The use of money to expand the corporation into New Brunswick will mean they (Quebec) will have higher equalization than if Hydro-Québec had given the money to the government," Locke said in a phone interview.

Locke said with Hydro-Québec committed to spending $700 million for the $4.75 billion purchase, that would translate into reduced profits being sent to the province, thereby hiking Ottawa's equalization payments to Quebec by "hundreds of millions" of dollars.

The province currently is the highest recipient of equalization in Canada, receiving $8.36 billion for this fiscal year from the $14.4 billion federal wealth-sharing program.

Locke argues that without the equalization windfall, the deal might be less desirable for Quebec.

So not only is this deal gonna cost New Brunswick money from potential future deals with Newfoundland to transmit its electricity to the US, as well as Nova Scotia, not only would the region as a whole lose much of its political sovereignty, now the whole country could end up paying for this crock of shit by giving Quebec more equalization money. Just lovely.

Mr. Samson said Mr. McDonough’s resume notes under community involvement and contributions his past work on provincial and federal NDP election campaigns and fundraising for the party.

"It certainly could lead someone to suspect his name is coming forward because of his political involvement, and not because of his qualifications," Mr. Samson said.

At the meeting, Mr. Samson agreed with Mr. Morton that Mr. McDonough has good qualifications. But the Liberal said the problem is that committee members don’t see the resumes of all the applicants.

Mr. Samson said that means MLAs can’t know if they’re appointing the best candidates.

The committee sees only the names and resumes of the nominees put forward by cabinet.

The committee, which has a majority of NDP members, turned down Mr. Samson’s request for a deferral.

Mr. Samson’s concern is the same one the NDP howled about while in opposition. The Liberal raised the matter at the committee’s meeting in September, and Premier Darrell Dexter said later that day that he would deal with it "in due course."

While I acknowledge that Mr. McDonough's resume is not unsuitable for such a position, the fact that this appears to be a hastily made decision to reward Screaming Alexa & her kid for years of loyalty to the NDP. This is exactly the kind of practice the Dippers used to railed against so sanctimoniously for years in opposition that they're now very happy to engage in while in gov't. That doesn't make them as bad as the Tories or Liberals, it makes them worse.

New Brunswickers reject NB Liberal sellout to Quebec

New Brunswickers are not so keen on the idea of their Liberal gov't surrendering their provincial sovereignty to Quebec. The plan to sell NB Power to Hydro-Quebec faces widespread opposition, & has taken a huge toll on provincial Grit fortunes:

A new public opinion poll shows 60 per cent of New Brunswickers are against the proposed sale of most of NB Power to Hydro-Québec.

The opposition is in stark contrast to the 55 per cent of Quebecers who support the agreement, according to the poll conducted by Montreal-based Léger Marketing for Quebecor Media Inc.

The survey found that while 60 per cent of New Brunswickers are against the deal, 22 per cent say they have favourable views and 18 per cent didn't respond or said they were unsure how they viewed it.

"There were two main reasons people in New Brunswick gave for being against the deal," Léger Marketing spokesman Mathieu Gagné said Monday.

"As consumers there seemed to be a fear that the power needs of New Brunswickers won't be looked after and that decisions affecting them will be made outside of the province," he said. "The other main concern is the loss of NB Power's strategic assets."

The poll was conducted by Internet between Nov. 19 and 21, with 502 New Brunswickers age 18 and over responding. The survey has a statistical margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points, 19 times out 20.

The poll revealed that discontent in New Brunswick over the NB Power deal has given the Progressive Conservative Opposition a boost in public support.

When New Brunswickers were asked about their voting intentions in the survey, 45 per cent said they would support the Conservatives if a provincial election was held now.

Liberal support came in at 33 per cen,t while the New Democrats held 19 per cent of public support. Other political parties or candidates netted four per cent in support.

As for the Graham government's satisfaction rate, 35 per cent of survey respondents said they're satisfied with the government's performance, while 57 per cent said they're not. Eight per cent of respondents said they were unsure if they're satisfied or not.

The numbers shows that Graham appears to be on the way out, which is too bad. Shawn Graham has governed much the same way Frank McKenna did, from the centre-right. If I had lived in NB, i'd vote for the guy. But this sale of the power company to an outfit like Hydro-Quebec goes way too far. No province should ever have the kind of dominate over another, especially when the dominate province is Quebec, which has shown itself to be selfish, self-interested & ultra-parochial. Hopefully, for his sake, Graham will back away from the deal that will have such negative consequences for New Brunswick.

The people of Nova Scotia were warned, yet too many of my fellow Bluenosers were suckered in by the NDP's pledge during the campaign not to raise taxes or make cuts to program spending, guess what's happened!?!?!?!.....

Nova Scotia’s road back to a balanced budget will be painful and should include both tax hikes and program cuts, advisers to Premier Darrell Dexter said Friday.

Panel chairman Donald Savoie, a Universite de Moncton academic who has advised Liberal and Tory governments in the past, said the NDP government should use a "three-legged stool" approach — tax increases, spending cuts and a new economic growth agenda — to tackle the bleak financial situation.

The four-person panel doesn’t make specific recommendations on which taxes to increase or where to cut spending. But it does suggest looking at increasing the province’s share of the harmonized sales tax by two percentage points, which would offset the benefit consumers have enjoyed from the cuts in the federal share since 2006.

An HST increase would raise about $150 million in the first year, the panel says.

And, the government should look at raising the high-income surtax to 17 per cent from 10 per cent, the panel says. That would amount to $25 million to $30 million.

Just lovely. Of course these so called academics are unaware that every time you impose a massive tax hike, especially on the wealthy, tax revenues decline as these folks & their tax dollars seek refuge in a lower tax regime. Nova Scotia's tax structure is horribly uncompetitve to begin with, this will only compound the misery. On the other end of the screwjob scale, an HST hike will disproportionately affect the less well off, as their cost of living, in a province w/ wgaes well below the national averages, will go up at a time they can least afford it.

Nova Scotia's budgetary problems are not as a result of too little revenue coming in to the provincial coffers, but rather as a result of excessive & unchecked spending. The supposedly conservstive gov't always spent well beyond what was necessary & were terribly wasteful. Under their watch the PC's created such wonderous things as a department of Gaelic Affairs. Do we really need such a thing?? Ummm NO! The gov't has plenty of wiggle room in order for them to tighten their belts w/o reaching into the pockets of the already overtaxed Nova Scotians. Do that first before coming after any of my money.

Which brings us back to the title of the post, the lying socialist bastards running the province. It's been one broken promise after another by Darrell Dexter & his gang since they took ower just a few months ago. They pledged to be more respectful of the public finances, then the deputy premier this week was busted for lavish expense claims at luxury restaurant. They condemned the Tories for wanting to amend the finance act to allow for deficits, then they proceeded to do the very same thing themselves. Now they are setting the stage for tghe mother of all broken promises, a massive tax hike that will severly damage the economy. I hope & suspect this time that this is indeed the straw the broke the camel's back, & that the public will rise up against this socialist madness & send the Dippers a stern message.

Well the latest example of the pernicious influence of the cocktail partiers is this supposed scandal of Rick Dykstra using his Blackberry at a remembrance day ceremony he was at in his riding. Liberals say he was doing this in the middle of the service by directing people to look at the time from the RSS feed of the post in question was 11:06 AM, while Dykstra claims it was 11:38AM. Anyone who has any sorta experience w/ RSS knows the time it indicates as when a post was posted is not always, if at all, accurate.

Guess we can put this debacle, Blackberrygate if you will, along side Wafergate & Chequegate in the over-the-top insanity that Liberals engage in to smear the CPC & the Prime Minister. If they devoted themselves to actual substantial matter instead of these garbage, they'd be kicking their butts from one end of Canada to the other. As reported everywhere in the Great White North, the Stephen Harpers won and won last night, picking up two seats, one in Montmagny-L'Islet-Kamouraska-Riviere-du-Loup where Bernard Genereux took the seat in a by election, a seat that the Bloc held for a longgggggggggggg time. Les Bleus also triumphed in Nova Scotia's rural riding of Cumberland-Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley with Scott Armstrong being elected.

In Montreal's Hochelaga riding the Bloc Quebecois prevailed and out in Bee Cee it looks like an NDP win in New Westminster-Coquitlam.

The Liberals finished not first or second [trying to spin here] anywhere.

Look i'm a loyal true bue Tory & enjoy the partisan to & fro, but there are times when we have to knock that kinda stuff off. Contrary to what the cabinet ministers & other party officials, it's pretty damn clear that the route of the Olympic torch has been politicized, w/ Tory ridings getting numerous visits while opposition ridings getting little or nothing. Every Tory riding gets a visit from the flame, but ol' Ralphie boy's riding, the only one not painted blue, get skipped out on?? Not to mention bypassing Halifax, the provincial capital altogether, while every Tory held riding gets the Torch.?? C'mon it's tranparent & childish.

While many people are somewhat jaded & cynical when it comes to the Olympics, I more than readily confess that I am not one. I enjoy the Olympics, for many reasons. One of them is that it does bring people together, regardless of our many differences. So why try to ruin that?? The torch route needs to be modified, with overzealous partisanship ommitted.

I think labelling Liberals, such as these folks here, here, here & here as cocktail partiers is quite appropriate given that they are by & large mimicking the same tactics used by tea partiers who are trying to purge all those they consider heretics from the GOP, which as we all know has brought about a lot of success for them, look at how well they did in NY-23.

The cocktail partiers, many of whom in the past have criticized the PM for what they see as being as him being overly controlling of his caucus, & not allowing Tory MP's to vote as they please on various issues, are making up "hit lists" of MP's they want to have thrown out for daring to defy the Toronto consensus on the Long Gun registry. I guess the next step for them is to search for their very own Doug Hoffman.

I also seem to recall how these cocktail partiers. always attacked those big meanie conservatives for driving people like Scott Brison out of the new CPC or for supposedly mistreating Joe Clark, b/c he failed some kind of litmus test. If they felt this way then, why then are you doing to the likes of Keith Martin & Wayne Easter, what was done years ago to the Red Tories. If you think you're gonna be a maajority w/o the likes of Blue Liberals, you're gonna be mistaken.

Until the cocktail partiers realize that running people with Rosedale beliefs & opinions in rural ridings is doomed to failure, they're gonna be in the wilderness for a very long time. You need a big tent to fit over the government benches in the HoC. The Liberals used to know this, but seem happy to purge this out of their memories

I cannot be alone in noticing the similarities these days b/w the Liberal Party & the Republican Party. There are so many examples to draw from, but allow me to offer just the example of the pending vote on the Long Gun Registry to illustrate this point.

Firstly, let's take a look at the hysterical reaction of Liberals who have been attacking fellow Grits for even daring to support the abolition of this boondoggle. I cannot help but see the similarities b/w the reaction of these Grit twits, & RINO hunters who seek to purge anyone from the GOP who isn't 100% in lockstep with what they happen to believe in. Tell me, how's that working out for them??

Secondly, is how hellbent Liberals are on alienating themselves from rural & small town Canada. Folks from those parts see Liberals constantly grousing about how those big meanie Tories are being hard on violent criminals, while they are demonizing hunters & farmers, treating them as dangers to peace & order in our country. This, along with the long standing alienation of the party in the west is not the least bit different than how things are for Republicans in the northeastern US, & California. The GOP refuse to recognize the realities of these areas 7 as such have made things much harder for themselves as they try to wrest control of the US gov't away from Comrade Barack & his socialist hordes.

Note to Liberals, just b/c something is appealing to the champagne & caviar set in Rosedale & Westmount doesn't mean it'll sell in North Bay & Flin Flon. You'll only continue to shrink in both strength & relevance. You guys need to be expanding the size of the tent, rather than shrinking it. In case you haven't noticed, things aren't going too well for you lately & crap like this isn't going to help.

However I made it a special point of watching his show last nite to see if he would eat any crow after his beloved Democrats lost in New Jersey, & were trounced in Virginia. I guess he was embarressed by the Virginia result, especially after last year how he claimed that Virginia was no longer a GOP bastion. Don't know what I mean, allow Joe Scarborough do it for ya, as he does an excellent job channeling the scumbag.

Seems the Venezuelan people are getting fed up oooooohgo, finally. In a country that is swimming in oil, there are chronic water shortages, & of electricity, after what was left of private sector electric companies were nationalized, interestingly enough.

Late last year, Chávez mocked critics who warned that Venezuela, more than 90 percent dependent on oil revenues for its foreign earnings, was poorly positioned to ride out the global crisis. The country's economy, he said, was ``bulletproof.''

Worse still, its shrinking economy has done little to blunt inflation, which is running at close to 30 percent a year -- around three times the regional average. Overtaxed New Yorkers abandoning state

This is a cautionary tale for us all who work to resist the left who try to unleash their siren call that high taxes are a swell thing. Jurisdictions that impose high taxes, drive citizens away & deprive themselves of valuable tax revenue. Here's what is happening in New York:

New Yorkers are fleeing the state and city in alarming numbers -- and costing a fortune in lost tax dollars, a new study shows.

More than 1.5 million state residents left for other parts of the United States from 2000 to 2008, according to the report from the Empire Center for New York State Policy. It was the biggest out-of-state migration in the country.

The vast majority of the migrants, 1.1 million, were former residents of New York City -- meaning one out of seven city taxpayers moved out.

"The Empire State is being drained of an invaluable resource -- people," the report said. What's worse is that the families fleeing New York are being replaced by lower-income newcomers, who consequently pay less in taxes.

And it should be no surprise that the city -- and Manhattan in particular -- suffered the biggest loss in terms of taxable income.

The average Manhattan taxpayer who left the state earned $93,264 a year. The average newcomer to Manhattan earned only $72,726.

That's a difference of $20,538, the highest for any county in the state. Staten Island was second, with a $20,066 difference.

It all adds up to staggering loss in taxable income. During 2006-2007, the "migration flow" out of New York to other states amounted to a loss of $4.3 billion.

When left-wing politicians are so blinded by ideology, they can't see the very tangible damage their wrongheaded policies are doing. When will they learn that the way to make communities, regions & countries more prosperous isn't to tax more of the existing economic pie, but rather to create a bigger one??

The really sad thing though is that the way this loss of tax revenue will be dealt w/ is by raising tax rates even more so, thus driving more & more people away from NY. This vicious cycle will eventually be broken, but not before substantial damage has been inflicted.

The official Opposition is now one seat stronger in the House of Assembly.

Liberal candidate Marshall Dean was voted in as the newest MHA after winning the byelection in The Straits-White Bay North Tuesday night.

"I feel tremendously humbled by the fact that people in this district put such great confidence in me as a candidate; that they would want me to represent them in the House of Assembly," Dean said.

The Liberal candidate won 47 per cent of the vote (1,925), Progressive Conservative candidate Rick Pelley won 44.7 per cent (1,799) and New Democratic party candidate Dale Colbourne won 7.9 per cent (321).

The win gives the Liberals four seats in the House to the PCs' 42 and the NDPs' one.

Of the 6,816 eligible voters in the district, 4,045 (59 per cent) cast ballots.

Dean edged out Pelley by 126 votes

Williams spoke to reporters in St. John's shortly after the results were final.

"We knew we were in a fight and it was a hard battle, and full marks to Marshall Dean and to the Liberal party for pulling this out," he said.

Williams acknowledged the district has been traditionally Liberal and said it was the many small communities in the area that pushed the Liberals over the top.

"But that's politics," he said with a shrug.

It was on this date in 1964 that many believe the conservative movement as we know it was born. While the GOP convention of that year nominated Barry Goldwater, my number one political hero, it is now more known as the convention that Ronald Reagan, another political hero of mine, gave his clarion call of a speech to conservatives that sparked something special & gave rise to a revolution that eventually put Mr. Reagan in the White House, thus beginning the greatest presidency in American history IMO.

Americans cool on AGW hysteria

A poll out today on Americans’ attitudes about climate change contains sobering findings for those that favor aggressive action to curb U.S. emissions of greenhouse gases.

The survey, by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, found a sharp decline over the past year in the portion of Americans who see solid evidence that global temperatures are rising. According to the survey, conducted between Sept. 30 and Oct. 4 among 1,500 adults reached on cell phones and landlines, fewer respondents also see global warming as a very serious problem; 35% say that today, down from 44% in April 2008.

The survey also points to a decline in the proportion of Americans who say global temperatures are rising as a result of human activity. Just 36% say that currently, down from 47% last year.

Thank goodness for the Americans, hopefully they'll save us from any Copenhagen created madness.

Nato defence ministers signalled their backing for the Afghan strategy put forward by the American commander General Stanley McChrystal yesterday in an implicit rejection of the alternative plan proposed by US Vice-President Joe Biden.

The general had made an unscheduled appearance at the meeting of ministers in Bratislava, Slovakia, to give a presentation behind closed doors. Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Nato secretary general, said: "What we did today was to discuss General McChrystal's overall assessment, his overall approach, and I have noted a broad support from all ministers of this overall counter-insurgency approach."

It's time for Obama to wisen up & realize that the real enemy he should be fighting is the Taliban, not Fox News.

Why Nik Nanos is the best at what he does

The definitive poll on the current fortunes of the political parties, the Nanos poll is out & it confirms what all the others have said, but with more credible elements:

CPC 40%
LPC 30%
NDP 17%
BQ 9%
GPC 5%

Here's why it's more credible than the other, aside from the obvious that it was done by Nanos. Firstly, the Green numbers are much more accurate. I refuse to believe that they are at or anywhere near double digit support levels. What MSM exposure has the party had?? Zip. Betty May has been a much less present figure in the political consciousness, & if she's nowhere, the party is. The Green Party is more aptly titled the Betty May vanity express.

Secondly, as much as it pains me to say so, being here on the east coast & all, the polls shows the Tories with a sizeable lead over the Grits here isn't true. Given the state of affairs with the Newfies, the current tie Nanos shows is the best we can hope for.

But if Nanos says we're in majority territory, then I guess we are.

Yeah Obama sure thinks those Wall Street types are some awful, they're so awful he headlined a $30,400 per couple fundraiser last nite in the Big Apple, whose attendees were largely Wall Street execs, many of whom head up bailed out banks.

This was also the 23rd fundraiser that B.O. has attended since he took office, compared to 6 for Dubya at the same point into his presidency. Nice to see B.O. has his priorities straight, can't make up his mind about a new strategy in Afghanistan that his generals, & now Defence Secretary are pleading, but he's more than eager to play the role of Democratic bagman-in-chief.
